Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Important: Proper aftercare is essential for healing and preserving the quality of your tattoo. Follow these instructions carefully.

Two Aftercare Methods

Your artist will recommend which method is best for your tattoo. Follow only ONE of these methods:

Method 1: Traditional Bandage

  • Leave the wrap on for 2-4 hours after getting your tattoo
  • Remove the wrap gently and wash your hands thoroughly first
  • Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel (avoid regular towels)
  • Continue to Days 2-14 instructions below

Method 2: Saniderm/Tegaderm (Adhesive Bandage)

  • Leave the bandage on for 8-24 hours (as instructed by your artist)
  • You may see fluid, ink, and plasma buildup under the bandage - this is normal
  • Remove the bandage in the shower, peeling slowly and gently
  • After removal, follow the Days 2-14 instructions below
Remove Saniderm immediately if:

You experience a rash, excessive redness around the edges, severe itching, or if the bandage develops a leak. Switch to traditional aftercare method if this occurs.

Days 2-14: The Healing Process

Daily Care Routine

  • Wash your tattoo 2-3 times daily with fragrance-free soap
  • Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel
  • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion
  • Don't over-moisturize - your skin needs to breathe

What to Expect

  • Peeling and flaking is normal around days 3-7
  • Some scabbing may occur - do not pick or scratch
  • Itching is common during healing - tap gently if needed
  • Colors may appear dull during healing - this is temporary

What to Avoid

  • No swimming - pools, hot tubs, lakes, or oceans for 2-3 weeks
  • No sun exposure - keep your tattoo covered or use SPF 50+ after healing
  • No soaking - quick showers only, no baths
  • No tight clothing - wear loose, breathable fabrics
  • No scratching or picking - let scabs fall off naturally
  • No gym or heavy sweating - for at least 3-5 days
  • No pets - keep animals away from fresh tattoos
